Plant/Vegetable Oils can be eaten, as can all foods, but with few exceptions, you can't use them TOPICALLY whether they come from the seed, stem, root, or flower. They are best at penetrating the skin, and deliver the most salicylates.  There are, however, some Low-Sal* oils: coconut, sesame, sunflower, safflower & vegetable oils, that are okay in cleansers/soaps & shampoos (IF they are rinsed off quickly), but NOT okay in other topicals (skin lotion, etc.), EXCEPT where specifically stated as okay in a certain type of product, i.e., in lipstick.  For example, safflower oil is okay in very tiny amounts but NOT okay in massage or bath oils. If you suspect you block easily don't use it.

Hydrogenation doesn't make a Sal-FullTM oil okay.

The following oils consumed as or with food (e.g. a salad dressing) are fine, however, if someone is blocking and the culprit cannot be found, I would be inclined to do a blocking test on any oil taken in medicinal levels by capsule or the spoonful.

Oils are safe to use as a FILLER in medications and supplements.

Actinidia Chinensis Seed Oil; Kiwi Seed Oil
Almond oil (Sal-high)
Apricot Kernel Oil
Arachish hypogaea (peanut oil)
Avocado oil
Canola Oil (Low-Sal)
Castor bean oil; Castor bean seed oil (too strong to eat also)
Cedarwood Oil
Citronella

Coconut oil

We've always been told it was a Low-SalTM (GG archives: Sal: Ivory Soap warning! from Nurse Claudia1, June 2, 1999), however, we've discovered it is listed as high in salicylates here and here.  Ok to cook in but not to use topically (although if in soap or shampoo is ok if washed off quickly).  It is also not known how much could be ingested as a therapeutic supplement before blocking, but as much as one would have on a salad would probably be ok. As a supplement it would be somewhat less likely to block than it would topically. Coconut oil is typically the same product whether it is labeled as a supplement or a food.  Keep an eye on progress when using it as a supplement.

Coffee Bean Oil
Corn Oil,

Moderate to high amounts salicylates (see Maize, Zea Mays, Corn) - Corn oil has always been considered free from sals by Dr St Amand and he continues with that belief, but recent data has been found to indicate that it can contain sals.  Under "moderate" sal-content at Food Salicylate Content Corn oil, Sweet corn, Popcorn, Peanut and sesame are in the same category as corn oil -- moderate.  And olive oil is listed as high.  Sunflower oil is listed as containing negligible sals.  Here are some measurements of sals in various forms of corn from A table of salicylate content in foods Sweetcorn 0.13, fresh Sweetcorn 0.26 - 0.39, canned Maize 0.43 dry.  In Food Can Make You Ill, The grain of Maize is listed as high whereas the grains of Barley, buckwheat, millet, oats, rice, rye, wheat are listed as negligible, if any .   We think corn oil would be ok in a supplement but suspect it might block at least some if used topically.  If you've been using it and progressing well there is nothing to be concerned about, however, use it with caution if you are just starting out.  If you have a problem with recovery progress do a blocking test.

Cottonseed oil
Cotton seed oil
Dog Rose Hips Oil
Fennel (Low-SalTM)
Flaxseed oil
(St. Amand reported one patient blocked using 8 capsules daily and we've had one other report of someone blocking using it in medicinal levels but we've also had a report from a Sal-Sensitive member that she can take around 1/2 tbsp night and morning and not block.  It is unknown how much of any oil can be ingested in a day without blocking but we think that the usual amounts of oils drizzled over food are unlikely to block & eating whole or Ground Flaxseed will not block

Jojoba Oil [Buxux chinensis]

Contains salicylates. The oil is a liquid wax which we strongly suspect will block as it is touted for its ability to penetrate the skin. Jojoba Butter claims to be all natural and will probably have the same action as the oil, or very close to it.  It would be ok if  rinsed off quickly as is the case with most soaps and body washes. I'd not feel confident using any Jojoba in other types of topical products or concentrated in supplements.

Laurel Oil (do not use any way at all)
Lemon Grass Oil
Linseed Oil
Macadamia Oil
Maize (see Corn, Corn Oil & Zea Mays)
Mango Seed Oil & Mango Seed Butter

("Mango butter is obtained from de-shelled fruit kernels of the mango tree, Mangifera indica..." There are only moderate levels of salicylates in the mango fruit but we can find no levels specifically for the seed listed anywhere so we suggest that anyone wanting to experiment with it in creams and lotions go carefully and do blocking tests if progress is slowed.  It should be ok in any soap/skin cleanser if rinsed off quickly - the butter also contains quercetin [a bioflavonoid] which is Sal-FreeTM but has a controversial listing)

Meadowfoam Seed Oil
Melaleuca Oil
Olive oil
Oregano seed oil ( too strong to eat also)

Palm Oil
Palm Kernel Oil; Hydrogenated Palm Kernel Oil
Peanut Oil;
Arachis hypogaea (Sal-high)
Peppermint oil (therapeutic: too strong to eat also)
Peroxidized Corn oil (see Corn, Corn Oil & Zea Mays)
Primrose Oil
Rose Oil
Rapeseed - see Unsure data base)

Rosewood Oil
Sandalwood
Sassafras Oil (too strong to eat also)
Sesame seed oil (Sesamum indicum; ((Sal-high) unknown how much
      can be eaten without blocking)
Sunflower seed oil (Helianthus Annuus) -- considered to be a
*Low-Sal thus generally OK in products such as cleansers
        that are washed off quickly
Tangerine oil
Tea Tree Oil
Udo's Oil (too strong to eat also)
Walnut

(Some sources list it as high & others as moderate)

Wheat germ oil [triticum vulgare] (Low-Sal*)

[The germ of wheat does inherently contain some measurable amounts of salicylic acid, so an oil extracted from the wheat germ will contain low amounts of sals.  It has not been found to block. If the wheat germ oil is the only *Low-Sal ingredient in make-up, it is probably fine, however, when wheat germ oil is combined with other *Low-Sal oils (as it often is in products such as lipsticks), we advise you to carefully monitor your progress if you choose to use the product.

Zea mays [corn] oil [see Corn & Corn oil]

[Zea Mays is the botanical name for corn, and, reportedly, it is required that the botanical name of ingredients derived from plants be listed on the label. When they specify that it is Cornstarch (zea mays), they are telling you the specific plant the ingredient is derived from. The problem we run into is when they simply say zea mays; then we don't have a clue if it's cornstarch, corn oil, etc. So in cases where only the botanical name is listed, we must either assume it contains sals, or contact the company to find out what the exact ingredient is.]

Examples of Medications, Rubs, Vitamins & Supplements Containing Aspirin or Other Sals
All medications containing aspirin will block -- Check PDR in USA; CPS in Canada; MIMS in Aus; online drug index  They will have "sal" in the chemical name.

Don't use Sublingual Allergy Drops, Nasal Spray, a suppository or vaginal cream or a Patch containing "salicylate" ingredients.

We just don't know if plant source allergy shots will block or not.

NOTE: Ingredients such as castor oil or Acacia added to a tablet as a filler are not in sufficient quantity to block guai. They cannot be used as a medicinal supplement, but as a filler they are considered safe. This is not true, however, of any of the mints, which are potent salicylates.

Usually when something is put into a capsule it is concentrated.  It's such a small amount, it's usually reduced and made stronger.

Acacia (ok as a filler in medications)
Airborn Effervescent Drink

Alkaloids - need to be assessed on an individual basis (other
than betaine & caffeine which are on the Sal-free list).
Alka Seltzer (Gold is ok)
Aloe (agave lechuguilla)

(added sal ingredients, e.g. Aloe barbadensis)

Amigesic (salsalate)

Australian Dream Cream

(New formulation contains black pepper to the degree that it burned a Guai'ers skin. See this information in the archives (Other: Australian Dream Cream, December 26, 2004)

Avena sativa

Oat (grain), Oat seed, Oat kernal flour; Oat flour; Oat bran fibre; Oatmeal; Oat protein are all Sal-NegTM thus fine to use on the guai protocol.  However, Avena sativa (the whole oat plant or oat grass, oat straw, oat leaf & oat root) are all Sal-FullTM and, excluding the oat root from the grouping, is now emerging in supplements.  It would be a concern if people did not distinguish the harmless topical ingredients listed above from the entire plant now sometimes being used in supplements.  Therefore, if any of the "oats" listed above are not specified (along with avena sativa) on a supplement, you should confirm that the actual ingredient is from the oat rather than from the whole plant or any of these parts of the plant; the grass, straw, root & leaf.

Juice Plus

This product is concentrated.  It is exactly the sort of juice that may be too concentrated for the digestive system to process completely, resulting in some of the salicylates not being altered by the liver, finding their way to the kidneys and blocking most Guai'ers.  There have been reports of blocking and others of not blocking.  As always, it depends on one's personal blocking tendency.

I called several companies and they all said the same thing, that their non-mint, regular nicorette gum contains peppermint oil, so that appears to be true across all brands. It blocked me for four years.  Apparently they add the oil to mask an otherwise less than pleasant taste.")

Silybum Marianum (Milk Thistle)

Silymarin/Silimarin

Silymarin is an extract of milk thistle that contains seven distinct flavonolignan compounds and a flavonoid.  Individually, each chemical in silymarin is Sal-FreeTM, therefore, if pure, silymarin would be Sal-FreeTM.  Unfortunately we have not seen any products that contain a purified form of silymarin. Products usually contain an extract of the whole milk thistle plant that is standardized to contain a percentage of silymarin. This means that most if not all products that list silymarin still contain a percentage of the whole plant and thus would be Sal-FullTM.

Silybin, Silibin & Silibinin  are Sal-FreeTM IF pure.

Sinequan (one brand contains peppermint oil)
Soma Compound (contains aspirin)
Spironolactone/Aldactone

Although even salicylate fillers in most prescription medications are fine, we've had a number of very credible blockings reports with Spironolactone/Aldactone (see archives).  They were related to the very strong peppermint (unlisted) flavor used to mask the strong odour of its ingredients.

Stevia extract (liquid) is concentrated.

Do not use as an herbal medication and don't use in topicals, or as a medicinal tea.

However a very few drops seem not to block.  Packaged akin to sugar, mixed with maltodextrin, should be ok as well since there is so much maltodextrin there's unlikely to be enough stevia.   Dried leaves sprinkled on food or added to beverage should be fine, as with any herb used for seasoning.  Stevia is sometimes  used to sweeten supplements (e.g., lozenges/troches, sublingual, oral sprays, etc.) and, without asking for the information from the manufacturer, we have no way of knowing what form they used (powder or liquic), what quantity or how  much would block each individual.  If you've been using a product containing it and your progress is fine, there's no need to be concerned but it should be one of the items considered as blocking if progress is slowed or halted.  More about Stevia

Medicinal Herbs  (are strong enough to block guaifenesin)

Herbs include leaves, bark, berries, roots, gums, seeds, stems and flowers. We don't need to be concerned about gums as they don't penetrate the skin.

Aloe; Aloe vera; Aloe Leaf Extract; Aloe barbadensis
Anise; Annatto

(IF the annatto extract is truly only a filler (it's sometimes added for color), then it is fine.  However, if it is more than just a filler, it could be enough to block. If it is a "compound" supplement, it might be there for a different purpose. A call to the company may confirm its status in the product)

Borage (Borago officinalis) L. or Boraga officinalis)

Family Boraginaceae: Herbs, shrubs and trees; about 2000 species distributed world-wide. Essential oils are very rare.

When Gardening, wear gloves around all plants

Garden plants especially high in salicylates include

Acacia
Aspen
Birch
Geraniums
Lillies
Marigolds
Mints
Rose hips
Tea tree
Tulips
Violets
Willow
Untreated wood products

are known upon occasion to block for much longer than 24 hours. Natural salicylates are present in barks, but barks also contain glycosides which are converted by the liver and intestinal tract to other more potent and long-lasting salicylates.  Be extremely careful when pruning woody-shrubs, trees and handling fire wood.  Cover up well when dispersing wood mulch.

Cutting down xmas trees could block so you might want to be well covered and wear gloves.

Fruits, including:

Apple; Apricot;
Blackberry;
Blackcurrant; Boysenberry; Blueberry;

Cantaloupe; Cherry; Cranberry; Custard apple

Date

Fig

Guava; Grape; Grapefruit

Miscellaneous:
Alcusal
BHA when it stands for beta hydroxy acid

It can also stand for Butylated Hydroxy Anisole which is ok. Call the company to see which it is.

Catnip
Chewing Gums (all) *might* be contaminated with Salicylates from

previous runs during production & contain a small amount of sals in  their base.  We've had reports of blocking, even with non-flavor gums,  i.e. Nicotine original. If you decide to chew them anyway don't choose  a mint (many Bubble gum flavors also contain some mint) & perhaps steer clear of the natural Cinnamons also, and see the blocking  test instructions in the Sal-FAQ (remember that partial blocking isn't easy to detect without mapping over a goodly period of time).  Call the companies to double check that a Cinnamon flavor is artificial even if it states it is - there might be regional differences in the source of flavors.

Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue & Irritable Bowel: Treating Symptoms Treating Cause

By Dr Gregory K. Penniston
(The re-titled new edition to
The Guaifenesin Guide)

A unique book that gives sufferers and their families clear explanations and practical information on every type of treatment for these distressing and hard to manage disorders. It dispels the misconceptions, that lead some people to dismiss these conditions, with thoughtful explanations and reasoning. This book gives emphasis to eliminating the conditions by addressing their 'cause', with a commonly used 'over-the-counter' medication, guaifenesin and provides detailed, easy-to-follow guidelines.

Parting the Fog: The Personal Side of Fibromyalgia/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

By Sue Jones, a GG Member

Parting the Fog" is a candid, first person account of what it is like to walk in the shoes of someone suffering from fibromyalgia/chronic fatigue syndrome. It relays the seriousness of this condition in an easy-to-read manner, while employing humor and focusing on hope.

Crack Up at the Wake of Dawn: Everyday Poetry to Incite and Delight Your Soul

Another great Book from our GG Member Sue Jones!  If you are a fan of "Parting the Fog", you won't want to miss this book. Although it isn't specific to fibro, you WILL find chapters you can closely relate to, since many topics are dealt with. Some of the poems may make you cry, others make you laugh, and still others trigger a thought or give you greater insight. Whichever the case, you won't be left unaffected.

Take My Hand: The Extraordinary Story of a Girl Named Janis

In Take My Hand, Audrey Revell (a long time member of GG) paints a vivid and moving picture of the life and indomitable spirit of her daughter Janis, an exceptionally talented musician and composer despite having lost her sight as a child together with progressive hearing loss.
